This unique festival displays the wonders of Ethiopian culture in all its variety in the fields of music, theater and dance. The Festival provides a worthy stage for this rich culture, which is not sufficiently known by Israeli audiences, and presents moving joint productions by veteran artists and promising young upcoming performers—the current generation of Israeli Ethiopian creativity in Israel. The opening Festival performance presents an encounter bringing together three beloved female vocalists: Ester Rada, Hewan Meshesha and Aveva Dese. The Festival dedicates its closing performance to Abate Berihun, the doyen of Israeli-Ethiopian music in Israel, with participants Shlomo Bar, Ehud Banai and the young and promising Israeli-Ethiopian vocalist Rudi Bainesay. These, together with performances of music, rap, hip hop, theater and dance promise us an exciting Festival, filled with surprises. This unique festival presents multifaceted Ethiopian cultural traditions in the fields of music, theater and dance, its encounters with Israeli culture, and the fascinating connections and collaborations between artists from the Ethiopian community and Israeli artists. This year’s festival puts special emphasis on pioneering female artists: the opening performance brings together three well-known and much loved artists: Ester Rada, Hewan Meshesha and Aveva Dese. The performance is dedicated to the memory of the late Michal Sela, with whom we had the privilege of working at Confederation House. The festival will host a long lineup of female artists, including Rudi Bainesay, Ayala Ingedashet, Hanny Mesele, Dege Feder, Oshi Masala and Samrat Haylu. In addition, this year’s program includes a hip-hop performance by outstanding artists of that scene, Eden Derso and Teddy Neguse, and a rap performance that offers the audience unique Ethiopian funk, Gili Yalo with Dj genetu Yossef, AG (Avraham Getahon), Ayallew and Hanny Mesele. The closing performance is a tribute to Abate Berihun, the doyen of Israeli-Ethiopian music in Israel, a founder of the Hullegeb Festival and its first artistic director.Berihun will host Ehud Banai, Shlomo Bar and promising young vocalist Rudi Bainesay. Three female vocal artists join forces for the opening concert of the Hullegeb Festival—Ester Rada, who has created a sensation on festival stages worldwide; Aveva Dese, soloist and songwriter; and Hewan Meshesha, soloist of the Ground Heights band. Their performance looks to the heritage of the past and strides into the future. Setineti means femininity in Amharic. The performance presents the musical influences of three creative women, born in Israel to Ethiopian families. Each reveals her musical journey, with roots in Ethiopia but encompassing varied influences. Three outstanding and daring artists in the Israeli music scene: Gili Yalo, Eden Derso and Teddy Neguse, embark on an electrifying musical journey from the Gondar Mountains in northern Ethiopia to Israel’s complex urban streets, infusing them with Ethio-jazz, groove, Afro-beat, and of course hip-hop. Together with musicians from the jazz scene they offer a performance with songs in Hebrew and Amharic, and a blend of traditional Ethiopian sounds with modern music and contemporary production to create a unique combination, between past, present and future. Gili Yalo is one of the exciting ambassadors of the groove scene in Israel. He has appeared on major stages around the world and has participated in major festivals. Eden Derso is one of the promising and intriguing artists in Israel, with feminine lyricism, fresh and uncompromising, and a stirring voice. Saturday night is a great time to release energy with some great artists, gathered under one roof for an unforgettable evening of black music that is a pleasure to the ears and the feet: hip-hop, dancehall and Aafrobeat. DJ Gentu Yosef will see to it that everyone moves to the sounds of black music of all these genres, together with rapper AG from Kiryat Gat, who connects Ethiopian instruments to hip hop funk, creating unique Ethiopian E-funk. Hanny Mesele, combines British and Jamaican dancehall and afro- beat R&B in Amharic and Hebrew. Ayallew is one of the outstanding dancehall artists on the local scene in recent years. The performance brings together Samrat Haylu and Evyatar Said, two artists examining the similarities and differences between Yemenite and Amharic dance, and touching upon questions of ritual, tradition, relation to distance and proximity, gender and more. Two dance performances of dancer-choreographer Dega Feder and the Beta dance company, under her artistic direction. dance work by Feder and the Beta Ensemble is based upon a unique idiom developed by Feder, which interweaves contemporary dancewithelements of Ethiopian dance movements, constructing a new style from them. The work consists of repetitive movements recurring in different variations. Feder utilizes movement like a garment worn again and again until it wears out, squeezing it to the very last drop. The solo work “Outstanding” is performed by Feder and focuses upon movements restricted by externally imposed constraints of space. Dege attempts to find the freedom and independence in every tiny scrap of movement that remains possible in the limited space surrounding her. The Hullegeb Theater Ensemble’s new production takes place in 2030, when Israel has fallen under a dictatorial regime. A high ranking organizational advisor is forced to cooperate with the authorities and three female characters find themselves experiencing a tragic reality when, amidst the pain, a gentle love story unfolds. The 1960s and early 70s are regarded as the golden age of Ethiopian popular music, which unfortunately came to an end with the rise of the governing military junta. During those years, Ethiopian music absorbed varied influences of pop, rock and jazz and local superstars such as Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete and Aster Aweke created a series of eternal hits that remain popular to this day in Ethiopia Saxophonist and vocalist Abate Berihun, the doyen of Israeli-Ethiopian musicians, leads the Tesfa Band, whose name means “hope” in Amharic—young musicians who present traditional-folk songs and melodies that combine in a tribute to the inspiration of the Golden Age. Abate Berihun is the doyen of Israeli-Ethiopian musicians. Berihun is a performer, arranger and composer who connects Ethiopian popular music, Ethio-jazz and Afrobeat, and Jewish soul music based upon Ethiopian Jewish prayers and ancient texts. Berihun was also one of the founders of the Hullegeb Israeli-Ethiopian Arts Festival and was its first artistic director. Confederation House is proud to dedicate a tribute performance to this special artist. In the performance Berihun will host vocalist and percussionist Shlomo Bar, founder of the Natural Gathering band, who previously collaborated with Berihun in a performance at the Oud Festival two years ago. Additional guests will be singersongwriter Ehud Banai, who has hosted Berihun in his concerts, and promising young Israeli-Ethiopian singersongwriter Rudi Bainesay.
