Olga Avigail Mieleszczuk, a Warsaw-born vocal artist who resides in Jerusalem, comes to Confederation House with her performance: A meydele fun Poyln (a girl from Poland). In this performance she brings back to life the forgotten multi-cultural world of Poland during the period prior to World War II—a time when the Yiddish language found its way into Polish and the melodies of the klezmer bands blended with the songs of mountain sheepherders. The performance was inspired by the legacy of Miriam Nirenberg, a Jewish vocalist from Kobryn who was active at the beginning of the 20th century. The premier of this performance was presented at Lincoln Center in New York and subsequent performances were given in Canada, Poland, Slovakia and Russia.
Avigail Mieleszczuk is a vocalist, accordionist, researcher of the musical traditions of Eastern Europe, and a leading figure in the world Yiddish music scene. She has released five albums of Jewish and Israeli music and initiates intercultural projects with artists from Poland, the USA and Israel.
