Rebetiko was born at the periphery of Greek society and began among Greek refugees from Asia Minor—today’s Turkey. This music rests upon eastern makamat and was created to express and assuage pain, replacing it with joy and entertainment deep into the night. For years this musical genre became popular and received legitimacy thanks to composers such as Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hajidakis.
Vocalist Nataly Orion studied Greek language and the secrets of music, appeared throughout Greece and collaborated with some of the finest artists in this field in Israel and abroad, including Glykeria. Orion will perform rebetiko and Smyrnaika songs lovingly and with deep feeling, accompanied by a typical musical ensemble, returning us to Greece of 100 years ago.
