International oud virtuoso Prof. Tayseer Elias honors Um Kalthoum and her sisters, the great Arab female vocalists of Egypt of the 20th century—admired singers who shaped Arab art music and left their mark upon it, each in her own way, becoming living legends.
The concert is devoted to the finest canonic works performed by Um Kalthoum, Layla Mourad, Asmahan, Warda al Jazairiya, Hoda Sultan, Nagat al-Saghira and Faiza Ahmad. This is a moving and inspiring vocal musical performance that includes a wide range of works in diverse musical styles, works that are the mainstays of 20th-century Arab classics. There will also be improvisational segments, contributing to the sense of emotional depth—tarab!
Elias, an outstanding contemporary oud player and musician, created the musical ensemble that accompanies noted vocalist Violet Salameh, performing a wide and colorful range of the songs of these great artists.
