Singer songwriter and international vocal artist Mor Karabasi embarks on a musical journey between Israel, Spain, Morocco and its Atlas Mountains. Karabasi connects the liturgical music of the Jews of northern Morocco with the Haketiya and Berber music of Atlas Mountain villages, seeking a female vocal presence in a largely masculine musical world.
Karabasi learned the liturgical songs from her grandfather, Shalom Asaraf, and from some of the great paytanim. In the course of her journeys she explored the roots of the Moroccan-Spanish dynasty of her mother’s family, discovering its musical roots. Thus she encountered the song of the women of the Atlas Mountains and was moved by rhythms and lyrics full of longing, sung by women in a world that seeks to silence their voices.
In this electrifying performance Mor Karabasi combines tradition with new arrangements.
