THE 9TH HULLEGEB ISRAELI-ETHIOPIAN ARTS FESTIVAL
In 1986, a few months after the waves of immigration from Ethiopia, Israeli-French ethnomusicologist Prof. Simha Arom initiated documentation of the prayers of the Beta Israel, the Ethiopian Jewish community. Over the years, the spiritual leaders, the keisim of the Beta Israel, were recorded and now, thirty years later, a rare selection of these prayers has been released.
This event marks the publication of that research, with the participation of those keisim still with us and family members of the keisim who were recorded. In the performance historic recordings will be played, and the spiritual leaders active today will perform a selection of the prayers. The performance is a production of the Jewish Music Research Centre at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in cooperation with Confederation House, the National Library of Israel and the French CNRS in Jerusalem.
